The definition for the word mantra from Sanskrit is ‘Mananal trayate ithi mantra’. Mantra Protects He who chants it. The word mantra is the combination of two words, Man-Manas(mind) and trai-Protects. So mantra is a tool used to free from mind, the vagaries of mind. In Ammas (Sri mata Amritanandamayi devi) words Guru Mantra is a vehicle, which carries us to the Supreme bliss by protecting from worldly harms. Guru Mantra is different from all other mantras, It is the mantra given by a Self realized Guru, who knows all the obstacles and misleadings in the path of liberation. Guru Mantra carries the Sankalpa of the Guru, Guru Sankalpa is the divine resolve put on the disciple by Guru . Hence it is more beneficial if you can get a mantra from Guru, it carries the divine Sankalpa of Guru, its like an automatic vehicle and it knows where to Go, our job is to chant the mantra without fail.
Mantras can be divided into Satvic, Rajasic and Tamasic levels. Satvic mantra normally chant for the liberation of soul, happiness of all beings. Rajasic mantra chant for worldly pleasures, such as money, majesty, relationship etc. Tamasic mantras normally used to destruct others. You can use mantras to achieve almost everything in the world.
There are special healing mantras exists for healing various illness, can be used with Yoga and Ayurvedic therapy. The Main three parts of a mantra is 1, Sound factor 2, Energy Factor 3, Mind factor. The sound is the body of mantra. Each mantra has its own way of chanting, such as qualities of vowels, particularities of pronunciation etc. Pranic or energy factor is the effect of mantra. Effect of mantra can be changed by altering the way, intensity, force of chanting, breath alignment, which alters the energy of mantra. The last factor is the mind factor, which is the intention, thought that we put on the mantra, which is the heart of a mantra. If we get a mantra from SatGuru (Soul realized Guru), He put his intention, thought (a satgurus thought and power is no different from Gods), divine power into the mantra which is specially meant for the particular disciple. May be two disciples get similar mantra, but the intention Guru makes is entirely different.
