Lord Deeparadhana Mantras / Slokas | Chant during Lighting Diya or Lamp | Deepajyothi Parabrahma | Prayer

Deeparadhana Mantras, Slokas to Chant during Lighting Diya or Lamp

Deeparadhana or lighting a lamp or diya is an important tradition to follow during any puja or ritual. Devotees chant several mantras or slokas during Deepa aradhana. A Diya is symbol of Goddess Lakshmi, Saraswati and Goddess Durga as per many scriptures. Standing diya symbolizes the divine energy which can get away the darkness of sorrow and get us the brightness of joy.

Before starting any daily prayer or puja, light an oil lamp by chanting the below sloka
Subham Karoti Kalyanam
Arogyam Dhana Sampadah
Shatru Buddhi Vinashaya
Deepa Jyotir Namostute

After lighting the deepak place kumkum (vermillion), haldi (haridrika churna – turmeric) on the edges of the Lamp holders and place Akshatas near the lamp holders. In recent times, most of the devotees are using stainless steel lamps but it is recommended to use bronze, copper, silver or golden lamps.

After lighting the lamp, chant the below prayer
Deepajyothi Parabrahma
Deepajyothi Janardhana
Deepo me hara tu paapam
Deepa Jyothir Namostuthe

What an earthen lamp means?
An earthen lamp (pramida) tells us ‘our duty to do a particular thing and undo some other thing’. The below sholka denotes it clearly..
“Vairagya thaila sampurne bhakti varthi samanvithe
Prabodha purnapathre thu gnapthi deepam vilokayeth”

It means – the oil in the lamp is ‘Vairagya’ (dispassion / renunciation from the material world), the lighting deepa is ‘Gnana Jyoti’ (divine light of wisdom) and the cotton wick or tape is the ‘bhakti’ (devotion / dedication) which makes us closer to moksha (liberation from samsara / salvation).

Lord Bala and Athibala Mantra in the Ramayana

Bala and Athibala are two mantras mentioned in the Ramayana. It is mentioned in the Balakanda of the Valmiki Ramayan. The mantras were given to Sri Ram and Lakshman by Vishwamitra Rishi while he was taking the two brothers to defend his yajna from Rakshasas (demons). It is believed that one who meditates on Bala and Athibala Mantras will not feel hunger, thirst and tiredness. No one will be able to defeat them in fights.

Although this mantra is mentioned in the Ramayan, it is not originally from the epic. The Bala and Athibala mantra is found in the Savitri Upanishad.

In Valmiki Ramayana the mantra is mentioned in the Balakanda – Sarga 22. But the mantra is not given in written format – it is mentioned that Sage Vishwamitra gave it to Sri Ram and Lakshman. The glory of it is also said in the chapter.

Although Bala and Athibala Mantra are two mantras – they are considered as one and are chanted together.

Apart from control over physical urges, knowledge, intelligence, beauty and oratory powers of a person will increase as a result of the chanting of the mantra.

The Rishi of this mantra is Virat Purush and the meter and Goddess is Gayatri.
