Lord Pradosham in October 2011 Dates Monthly Fast Dedicated to Shiva

Pradosham is a monthly fasting day dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. The day occurs twice during the Hindu lunar month. Pradosham dates in October 2011 – October 9 and October 24. Prayers are offered to Shiva and Goddess Parvati during the twilight period on the day.

The Pradosham on October 24 is on Monday and therefore it is also known as Som Pradosham.

Pradosham as the name indicates is a period just before sunset and after sunset. Loosely the Pradosham period is between 1.5 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunset.

Devotees fasting on the Pradosham day, break their fasting after the evening prayers.

Panchak is the transition of Moon from Kumbha Rashi (or Aquarius Zodiac) and Meena Rashi (or Pisces Zodiac).

Panchak is strictly followed by certain Hindu communities and they do not travel during the period and do not perform any auspicious ceremonies.

Lord Sankashti Chaturti in October 2011 Date Ganesh Sankashta Chaturthi Vrata

Sankati Chaturti, or Sankashta Chaturthi Vrata, is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha in a traditional Hindu month. The date of Sankashti Chaturti is October 15, 2011. Moonrise time is 8:19 PM. Ganesh Sankashta Chaturthi Vrata is of great importance in Marathi culture. It is known as Pillayar Sankatanashana Chaturthi in Tamil Nadu.

Sankat Chaturthi falls during the waning phase of the moon – fourth day after the full moon. Vinayaka devotees observe a fast (fasting or upvaas) on this day from sunrise and ends after sighting the moon. The importance of Sankata Chaturti Vrata was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtira, the eldest among the Pandavas. The importance of it is also narrated in the in the Narasimha Purana and Bhavishaya Purana.

Fasting on Sankata Chaturthi begins at sunrise and ends after moonrise – sighting of moon in the evening. Devotees offer special pujas and worship at Ganesha Temples.

There is a popular belief that observing Sankashta Chaturthi will bring material progress, prosperity and happiness and it will also help in the fulfillment of desires.

Ahoi Ashtami is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) in Kartik month (October – november). It is mainly celebrated in North India. Ahoi Ashtami 2011 date is October 19. This vrata is observed by mothers for the wellbeing of their children. Ahoi Ashtami is very similar to Karva Chauth fast observed on Kartik Chaturthi.
Ahoi Ashtami puja procedure and rituals of this puja may differ from place to place in North Indian states but the deity worshipped on this festival is same in every place. Ahoi Mata, the protector of children, is worshipped during Ahoi Astami puja. Women offer prayers to Ahoi Mata, observe strict fast and some special recipes based on the regional significance are prepared and offered to the Goddess. In the evening after seeing the stars in the sky, women break their fast.
It is note that Ahoi Ashtami 2011 date in USA and Canada is – October 19th. For other foreign countries like UAE, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia, Ahoi Ashtami 2011 date is October 19.

Lord Purnima October 2011 Time & Date Full Moon Day in Hindu Calendar

Purnima, also known as Pournami or Poornima, is the full moon day in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. In September 2011, the date of Purnima is October 11 and 12. The Purnima fasting is marked on October 11. The time of Poornima tithi is from 4:24 AM on October 11 to 6:27 AM on October 12. The Purnima in October 2011 is the Ashwin Purnima in most regions. In Tamil Calendar, it is the Purattassi Purnima.

October 11, 2011 is observed as Kojagari Lakshmi Purnima and Sharad Purnima.

Kartik Snan begins in North India on October 12, 2011.

Fasting and taking a dip in holy are the main religious practice for Hindus on the day.
